I tried machine quilting May 31, 2010

Filed under: May 2010,Sewing,Swaps — The Threaded Nest @ 1:15 pm

and I LOVED it!

Here is the front of the chair pillow I made for the Pillow Talk Swap 3.

(actually this is the FIRST quilted pillow I’ve EVER made!)

I did a little shadow quilting on my sewing machine using my walking foot…

I didn’t want the quilting to distract from the piecing or be too busy.

Printed fabrics from Michelle Engel Bencsko “Shade Garden” and “Dogwood” collections for Henry Glass

A little Amy Butler strip of fabric on the back that matches the Kona Cactus piping.

I used my new “piping/cording foot” and it worked FANTASTIC!

I didn’t have a 16″ pillow form to photograph the finished pillow with…

or a store selling one within 45 minutes…

so I hope my swap partner will photograph it for me ;0)

And the BEST thing about an envelope style back is there is no HAND stitching!

Happy sewing,

Turning Twelve… May 29, 2010

This time around I turned twelve, instead of twenty (quilt here), and it was sooo much easier!

Maybe it was easier because this is the second time I’ve worked up the Turning Twenty pattern (here)…

or maybe because with every stitch lovingly sewn came with it the intention of good health and love for my Father?

As this will be a quilt for him to comfort and keep him warm at his cancer treatments,

I sought to use a soothing color palette of greens, blues, and beiges.

I wanted it to be masculine, but not overbearingly so…

there is one small-scale floral in a celery green with a white background snuck in there.

It’s funny how much I LOVE this floral fabric.

I really hesitated to add it, but am so glad that I did.

In fact, I think it is my most favorite of all of the fabrics in this quilt ;0)

Wishing you a lovely long weekend!

Happy sewing,

Well on my way May 26, 2010

FINALLY got all of my wonky star bee blocks finished for the 3×6 Sampler Quilt Mini Bee

and OUT of my WIP box (pictured below) and into the mail today they went ;0)

I truly LOVE each and every color combination!

I actually got started on my Dad’s “Turning Twenty” quilt yesterday!

Isn’t the fabric for it LOVELY??

The fat quarters were cut, pressed, and I got the blocks half done…

I love how easy and quickly this pattern (here) works up and how the fabric takes the spot light.

I still have to get to turning this chair block into a pillow cover for the Pillow Talk Swap 3…

but I haven’t EVER made a pillow cover before…

so I ordered this pattern here so that it would indeed look like a pillow when I am finished

(that’s just how I roll, I am WAY too much of a perfectionist to just wing it, ha ha).

Well on my way to FINISHING all of my WIPs =0)

Happy sewing,

Make Way May 24, 2010

I couldn’t help myself from smiling this morning thinking

Make way for the ducklings!

as I began to tackle some of the WIPs in my sewing room.

Isn’t it lovely how your mind wonders to HAPPY thoughts when you are in the thick of sewing?

Make Way for the Ducklings by Robert McCloskey is a book I read many MANY times to R. when she was younger.

It makes me think of warm summer nights (it is wicked hot here right now!) and new beginnings.

I am definitely ready to be finished with my current projects and to begin some new ones!

Nothing bothers me more in my sewing room than a stack of half finished projects.

My goal this week is to clear out my sewing room to “make way” for some FRESH new quilts

inspired by this AMAZING book The Gentle Art of Quiltmaking by Jane Brocket ;0)

I have to say that this book has taken the spot as my MOST favorite quilting book in my sewing library!

I’ve never taken much notice to the Kaffe Fassett or Martha Negley fabrics,

but after seeing the “vintagey” looking quilts in this book I am TOTALLY in love with them!

I’ve ordered some Kaffe Fassett and Martha Negley samples (just add .063 of a yard to your cart) from Alewives Fabrics

in an attempt to select a “color story” (she actually guides you how to do this)

to make a quilt similar to the Purple Rain one in the book.

REALLY, I can’t wait to get started on it!

Happy sewing,

Pillow Talk Peek May 19, 2010

Filed under: May 2010,Quilting,Sewing,Swaps — The Threaded Nest @ 5:07 pm

Here’s a quick PEEK at the pillow I am working on for the Pillow Talk Swap 3!

I was INSPIRED by some of the lovely chairs here on flickr

but thought they looked way too COMPLICATED for me to attempt.

D. encouraged me to try anyways and drew up a chair just for me ;0)

I did a little piecing figuring out and VOILA we made our first pattern!

Not bad for a first go right?

Still have LOADS more sewing to do to actually make this into a pillow

but I’m well on my way…

but being the WILLY NILLY gal that I am

I will probably make it up in another color way and see which one I like best.

I really want my swap partner to LOVE it!

Happy sewing,

Mama’s House May 18, 2010

Filed under: Quilting,Virtual Quilting Bees — The Threaded Nest @ 7:46 am

June is Lael’s month for the Not Your Grandma’s Quilting Bee.

She chose a farm house themed blockand then left the second block up to our own creativity.

Now maybe I’ve been been reading a bit TOO MUCH Jane Austen

but I think every house needs a “Proper Lady”

so I made a sweet little mama to go along with her house ;0)

I used The ‘Burbs pattern from my favorite quilting book Material Obsession

as inspiration and did some IMPROVISATION as the book suggested.

Lael sent most of the fabrics I used and then I added some scraps from my own fabric stash.

For a first attempt at making these blocks, I am so PLEASED with how they turned out.

Enjoy Lael!

Happy quilting,
